How can you help?

Prayers--Without your prayers nothing we have done so far would have been possible.

There are many ways you can help with our project.  Our goal is to help make the neigbors of Casa de Camillo Torres more self-sufficient in their food product.  Please consider adopting one of the proposals listed below.  Every bit will help.

Proposals for projects

$8400. for the goats. That is, $2000. for site work and fencing for the two corrals along with $4400. for the barn and waterline we need to run to the barn from the main line.. Finally, the remainder of the money would go for milk goats which are already in herds in Northern Mexico since there is a temporary ban on the importation of goats from the U.S. (a ban that has existed for ten years with no end in sight.) The goats would number six or seven from developed herds around Monterey

Feeding at our local elementary school for the fifty children resident during their school year. For      For $3500. ($100. a week for the 35 weeks of the school year) we can provide eggs, milk and meat every school day for all fifty children. The mothers are currently cooking dayly but the feeding program of which they are a part has been cut back so that they now have money for only beans and tortillas each day. The other side to this program is that we would be able to help out the widows and single mothers who have chickens and rabbits by having a steady market for a year to buy locally what is needed.

The market for rabbit meat continues to get larger so we need to set up more small programs of rabbit breeding with our neighbors. The initial program is $800. to set up a single mother with the cages, the rabbits and food enough for two months for them to begin producing a crop with regularity.

We frequently have visitors from Central America, that is, the undocumented making their way North for economic freedom. With the flooding and the natural disasters over the last few years the numbers are increasing. Our little farm is an oasis for those folks making their way North. We would like to build a dormitory for guests to the farm. For $8400. we could build an edifice sufficient for 20 guests including a small apartment for a family to act as guardians for the property along with welcoming the guests who come by....

One of my dreams, for many years now, has been to start a small construction company to train young people from our little community. For $100,000. we could buy a backhoe/loader, a dump truck and pay the import taxes and transport. The equipment would be used by us in our community to build roads, drainage systems, etc. Half the year the equipment would be rented out to the municipality so that we could, eventually, be self sustaining on our farm..

Our monthly costs to survive include our rent ($200.), utilities and travel ($300.) and the $200. a month we pay local workers to maintain the farm stuff and chores. For $700. a month we live.

So- looms the question, how can you help? Talk to your parrish about sponsoring one of the projects- $100. a week from 4 couples is not extravagant. Talk to your diocese about mission funds. Talk to you local "Just Faith" groups or your coffee klatch friends. Wherever two or more are gathered in his name...
