Some More Pictures From Casa de Camillo Torres

This is the cement block making machine.  The blocks are used for building on the farm as well as being sold locally.  Some of the men in the community are employed to make the blocks.  This way they can earn some money to support their families.

Raising rabbits is one of the businesses that local families are being encouraged to start with the help of the farm.  Notice the cages that were designed by Richard and are built locally.  The rabbits are sold to local restaurants and Richard has begun tanning the hides. Richard and Areceli currently live in an apartment in the city while a house is being built on the farm.  Notice the simple construction with local lumber and cement blocks made on the farm.  Richard is an electrician and carpenter, skills he teaches the local young people.
A flock of laying hens provides eggs that are a rich source of protein to enrich the diet of the local people who usually only have rice and beans.  Notice the local wood used in the construction.  Plywood that we take for granted is not available there.  Richard is building a shop with the help of friends.  Here he is teaching local youths woodworking and furniture making.  Notice the construction using locally made cement blocks with a cement roof.  The farm is at 7,000 ft. and gets frequent heavy rain making wood construction impractical for most projects. This is the inside of the shop.  Jorje, a Catholic Worker from Dubuque Iowa help with a lot of the wiring.  The tools are donations that Richard has collected on his trips home. The only problem is that there is no electricity to the farm.  A gasoline powered generator has to be used to run the equipment.

Richard has been building this house on part of Casa de Camilo Torres.  It will be sold when completed to fund projects on the farm.
